For many people, Scrabble conjures up images of dreary Christmases with aged relatives, desperately trying to create a word from six vowels and a Q. It's fair to say that, while it has its enthusiasts, the lexicographer's dream board game had developed something of an image problem as it marked its 70th birthday this year.
