Tam 50 yıl önce 4 Şubat'ta NASA ilk ABD uydusu Explorer'ı aya fırlatmış, Beatles'da unutulmaz parçalarından Across the Universe'i kaydetmişti. Ayrıca 2008 her ikisinin de kuruluşunun 50. yıldönümü.

NASA, bu iki büyük olayın şerefine 4 Şubat 2008 saat 00:00'da (Türkiye saatiyle 02:00) kendi frekansından uzaya Across the Universe'i çaldı. Şarkının evrende saniyede 307 bin kilometre hızla 431 ışık yılı uzaklıktaki Kutup Yıldızı'na ulaşması planlanıyor.

Nokia starts to roll out gaming, networking sites

Nokia, the world's largest cellphone maker, started to roll-out its online gaming service N-Gage on Tuesday as it expands into mobile Internet services.

Nokia also opened its social networking site "Share on Ovi" on Tuesday, which allows people to share photos and videos and is built on technology acquired with the U.S. firm Twango, a spokesman for the company said.

100 bin Liverpool taraftarından 5'er bin pound toplamayı hedefleyen "Share Liverpool FC" isimli taraftar grubu, internet üzerinden örgütlenmeye başladı. Grubun liderliğini Liverpool Üniversitesi’nde futbol endüstrisi üzerine dersler veren okutman Rogan Taylor, Premier Lig’in eski iletişim departmanı yöneticisi Phil French ve avukat Kevin Jacquiss yapıyor.



Taylor, hedeflerinin Barcelona gibi 100 bin üyeye sahip, taraftarlarınca yönetilen bir kulüp yaratmak olduğunu vurguladı. Taylor, 100 bin Liverpool taraftarından 5'er bin pound toplayarak 500 milyon poundluk bir anapara oluşturmak ve bu parayla kulübü satın almak istediklerini kaydetti. Detayları fazla açıklanmayan kampanyaya en büyük ilginin Doğu Asya'dan geldiği belirtildi.

Liverpool FC'nin ABD'li sahipleri George Gillett ve Tom Hicks'in hisselerinin bir bölümünü Dubai kökenli bir şirkete satma girişiminin bu kararda etkisinin büyük olduğu söyleniyor. With the younger generation using online social networking and texting more than web-based emails for communicating, marketers need to adjust their strategies.

In a previous article, I raised the question of whether email was facing extinction due to the different communication behaviors of teenagers and young adults. Today's Generation Y, or iGen, members simply don't use email as often or as much to communicate as do older people; try sending an email to anyone under 22 and see if you get a quick response (or ANY response).

PS3 Games For Cheap in Japan

Sony Japan is set to continue a PlayStation tradition with the PlayStation 3: an official budget lineup. A Japanese online retailer has posted listings for the first set of PS3 titles to fall under the new "PlayStation 3 the Best" lineup.

According to the retailer, PS3 owners in Japan will soon be able to pick up PlayStation 3 the Best versions of Resistance, FolksSoul, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Gundam: Target in Sight, and Ridge Racer 7 for 3,800 yen each. All five will arrive on 3/19.

Buick Makes First Gaming Foray

Buick is not exactly the first car choice among the Xbox generation. But the General Motors brand thinks it can find 30-something car buyers with a new video-game promotion.

Buick is in the midst of a gaming competition it kicked off with EA Sports to coincide with its sponsorship of the Buick Invitational golf tournament, held last weekend. It is challenging Xbox 360 players of the "Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08" game to record clips of them completing challenges, such as making a hole-in-one, for an opportunity to win a Buick Enclave. The promotion, which concludes on Feb. 6, is part of Buick's entry into video-game advertising.

İtalyan gazetesi La Republica'nın verdiği habere göre İtalyan parlamentosunun üzerinde çalıştığı kanun tasarısında yer alan yeni telif hakkı kanunundaki bir madde de; 'Kullanıcılar birbirleriyle tanıtım, eğitim ve bilimsel amaçla kaliteleri düşürülmüş medya dosyaları paylaşabilir ancak satış yapamazlar' şeklinde hazırlanıyor.

Kanuda geçen 'kalitesi düşürülmüş' ibaresi İtalyan avukat Andrea Monti'ye göre kolaylıkla istenilen tarafa çekilebilir ve ufak oynamalarla mp3'ün kalitesi çok az düşürülerek yasal hale getirilebilir.

Kanunun kesin olarak çıkacağı bilinmiyor ancak İtalya'nın böyle bir kanun karşısında müzik şirketlerine nasıl açıklama yapacağı da merak konusu.

Ericsson says "very cautious" about Motorola assets

Ericsson Chief Executive Carl-Henric Svanberg said on Friday the Swedish firm would eye any assets put up for sale by U.S. rival Motorola Inc, but would be "very cautious" about any deal.

"As professional business leaders we look at everything, but we would take a very cautious view on such a thing because we do believe you are better off doing it on your own," Svanberg told an analysts' conference.

India, Arab Countries Struggle to Regain Internet Access

Internet access in India improved Friday as international service providers shifted their Internet traffic to cables under the Pacific Ocean to bypass two undersea cables damaged earlier this week.

Repairs, however, will take longer.

The two cables deep under the Mediterranean Sea snapped on Wednesday, disrupting service since then across a swath of Asia and the Middle East.

NASA to beam Beatles song to North Star

The Beatles are about to become radio stars in a whole new way.

NASA on Monday will broadcast the Beatles' song "Across the Universe" across the galaxy to Polaris, the North Star.



This first-ever beaming of a radio song by the space agency directly into deep space is nostalgia-driven.

It celebrates the 40th anniversary of the song, the 45th anniversary of NASA's Deep Space Network, which communicates with its distant probes, and the 50th anniversary of NASA.

Amazon.com adds web services to its offerings

Critics thought it was over the top when Amazon.com Inc. expanded from books into music in 1998. When the Web retailer let competitors start selling things alongside its own inventory in 2000, they said Amazon had gone nuts.

In both cases, Amazon proved them wrong. Media sales now total in the billions each quarter, and third-party merchandise, more profitable for Amazon than its own wares, makes up nearly a third of everything sold through the site.

Now, Amazon is making an even greater stretch -- selling storage, computing power and other behind-the-scenes data center services.

You can't really control what the blogosphere says about your brand, but with these simple steps you can exert more influence. The NextStage CRO explains.

You can think of this column as a follow up to Bloggers, influence and your brand, but you don't have to have read that column in order to understand this one.

Two kinds of bloggers

As we learned, there are essentially two kinds of bloggers that are relevant to your brand marketing, which we call Holmeses and Watsons.

NextStage monitored some 150 blogs of all types over a nine-month period. Blogs were kept as research elements regardless of activity levels and even (in some cases) changes of principle authors (the designated "blogger"). This part of our research revealed some solid takeaways for bloggers:

We learned how to determine if someone would be a Holmes or a Watson
We learned how to train someone to be a Holmes or a Watson
We learned how to determine if someone would gain dominance in certain geographies, in certain topics and how large that audience would be

And most importantly, we could train them as required.

Who controls the conversation? Frequency of posts

It turns out there are several ways to control the conversation. The first is to have the Holmes post frequently. This is a typical power vacuum proposition. A Holmes who posts infrequently will leave room for someone else to control the conversation.

Online Ads: Winners and Losers

Perhaps because a Jan. 2 report (pdf) by JPMorgan Chase on Internet stocks ran 312 pages, it took a while for many bloggers to digest it. “Nothing but Net,” written by Imran Khan, a stock analyst, and his team at the investment bank, predicted that Internet stocks were in for a great year, thanks in part to higher earnings, wider adoption of broadband, growth in e-commerce and growing revenues from online advertising.

It was the point about online advertising the caught the eye of several bloggers. The cost of ads per 1,000 viewers “bottomed out” in 2007, averaging $3.31, according to the report. This year, it predicted, ad rates will start to rise, reaching $3.86 by 2011.

Wesley Snipes Cleared of Serious Tax Charges

A federal jury returned a mixed verdict against the actor Wesley Snipes on Friday, acquitting him of the most serious tax charges he faced, but convicting him on three of six lesser charges.

The case was the most prominent tax prosecution since the billionaire hotelier Leona Helmsley was convicted of tax fraud in 1989.

Bidding reaches $18.55 bln in U.S. wireless auction

Bidding reached $18.55 billion on Friday in the U.S. Federal Communications Commission's record-setting auction of government-owned wireless airwaves, but there were no new offers for two large, closely watched slices of spectrum.

The total bidding, which covers five separate blocks of spectrum in the auction, was up from $15.64 billion on Thursday.

Fox's Super Sunday Ad Take: $260 Mil.

Fox is expected to take in a total of $225 million in advertising revenue on Super Bowl Sunday, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Sources explained that this will include the network's four-hour pre-game show; Super Bowl game telecast; and hour-long episode of its hit drama, House, which leads out of the game.

Microsoft Yahoo'yu satın mı alıyor?

Microsoft, Yahoo'yu hisse başı 31 dolar ile toplam 44 milyar 600 milyon dolar hisse ve nakit karşılığı satın almak istiyor.

U.S. tops new tech usage ranking

The United States, Sweden and Japan topped a new ranking that measures how well countries use telecommunications technologies -- networks, cell phones and computers -- to boost their social and economic prosperity.

Connectivity Scorecard, created by London Business School professor Leonard Waverman, and published on Wednesday, measured countries on around 30 indicators including usage of communications technology.

EBay Sellers Not Happy About Fee Changes

Vendors who sell their goods on eBay are scratching their heads after the company unveiled a new fee structure in effort to boost listings and maintain its share of the online auction market it helped start a decade ago.

While eBay Inc. says more than 60 percent of its sellers will save money with the new plan, several sellers have crunched their numbers and consider the rejigging a fee hike.

"We call it eBay math, it's a different math than most other people's math," said Randy Smythe, who used to sell music and movies on eBay from Southern California.

Under the old rules, for example, selling a purse at auction for $25 would have cost the seller $1.91, including 60 cents for listing the item plus eBay's commission of $1.31. Under the new structure, the seller would pay $2.74, including 55 cents to list the item plus a higher commission of $2.19.

MySpace launches developer platform

MySpace, the world's largest online social network, will launch its program to court outside software developers in February in a bid to widen the gap against rival Facebook.

As part of the February 5 launch, it has also promoted MySpace business development executive Amit Kapur to a new role as chief operating officer, the company will announce on Wednesday.

It appears Google's competitors in Internet search have an uphill climb. New research shows how the company is putting even more distance between itself and its rivals.

Efficient Frontier, a search-marketing tech provider, examined more than 17 billion impressions and 270 million clicks on search ads running through its system during the fourth quarter of 2007 and the same period a year earlier.

The results show the yawning gap Google has opened with its rivals, Microsoft and Yahoo!, because it continues to attract a growing majority of Internet searches.

EBay cutting listing fees, boosting commissions

EBay Inc. said Tuesday it will cut by up to 50 percent the fees it charges sellers to list their goods online, in an effort to boost listings and keep pace with other burgeoning e-commerce sites.

To balance the fee cut, the company plans to increase its commission on items that do sell, a method the company says sellers prefer because it lowers their risk if items do not sell.

The greatest fee increase will come for goods selling for less than $25. EBay's fee for those transactions will rise 67 percent, to 8.75 percent of the final sale price.

Microsoft Adds WSJ Sites to Network

Microsoft has inked a deal to sell contextual and search ads across Wall Street Journal sites, the latest move in the company's effort to build an ad network to rival Google's.

Under terms of the two-year agreement, Microsoft will displace Pulse 360, the company that previously ran contextual text listings. Wall Street Journal Digital Network properties, which include WSJ.com, Barrons.com and Marketwatch.com, had not previously provided search services. Microsoft will begin serving ads on the sites Feb. 1.

Man arrested in eBay sale of historic documents

New York state employee who had access to government-owned archives has been arrested on suspicion of stealing hundreds of historic documents, many of which he sold on eBay, authorities said on Monday.

Among the missing documents were an 1823 letter by Vice President John C. Calhoun and copies of the Davy Crockett Almanacs, pamphlets written by the frontiersman who died at the Alamo in Texas.

Daniel Lorello, 54, of Rensselaer, New York, was charged with grand larceny, possession of stolen property and fraud. He pleaded innocent in Albany City Court on Monday.

Buyers save billions of dollars each year bidding on eBay auctions, according to a new study that quantifies the benefits online consumers enjoy over and above what is derived by sellers, or eBay itself.

The independent research by two statisticians from the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business found buyers saved $7 billion that they might have otherwise been ready to pay in a study of eBay auction behavior in 2003.

Hackers Declare War on Scientology

A shadowy Internet group has succeeded in taking down a Scientology Web site after effectively declaring war on the church and calling for it to be destroyed.

The group, which goes by the name of Anonymous, is a disparate collection of hackers and activists.

It called for a wave of attacks against Scientology after accusing the church of "campaigns of misinformation" and "suppression of dissent."

At least one Scientology Web site was still down Friday morning.

The basic story is pretty simple. Top Apple iPhone salesman Steve Jobs claimed at Macworld Expo that he'd sold 4 million of the things, while AT&T said it had registered 2 million iPhones. What happened to the other 2 million?

Legal file-sharing service touts free music with ads

Qtrax, a new legal online file-sharing service that allows fans to download songs for free, said on Sunday it will launch with 25 million to 30 million copyrighted tracks with backing from major labels.

The free service will be funded through advertising revenue that Qtrax will share with the music companies.

Qtrax executives said the company's digital rights management technology will count the number of times each song has been played in order to fairly compensate artists and rights' holders, without restricting consumer use.

Heroes of Might and Magic V: Gold Edition

Strateji oyunu Heroes of Might and Magic V'in Gold Edition versiyonu yayınlandı.

Heroes serisinin yıllar önce hayal kırıklığı yaratan dördüncü oyununun ardından uzun bir süre devamı gelmemiş ve 2006 yılında serinin beşinci oyunuyla oyunseverler tekrar savaş alanına çıkmıştı. Başarılı bulanan oyuna "Hammers of Fate" ve yakın bir zamanda da "Tribes of East" adında iki ek paket eklenmiş bunlarla yeni ırklar (Dwarf ve Barbarian) oyuna dahil edilmişti.

MySpace hacklendi

Wired.com sitesinin açıklamasına göre MySpace de kayıtlı olan binlerce özel resim bir torrent sitesinde yayımlandı.

DMaul takma adını kullanan bir hacker, online platformun bir güvenlik açığı sayesinde, halka açık olmayan sayısız resmi indirdi. 16 yaşın altında olan kullanıcıların resimleri otomatikman "özel" olarak işaretleniyordu. Böylece diğer kullanıcılar bunları sadece davet üzerine görebiliyorlardı.

44.000 MySpace profilini taradığını ve resimleri 17 GB büyüklüğünde bir dosyada paketleyip bunları Pirate Bay adındaki torrent web sitesinde indirmeye sunduğunu açıkladı. Bu süre zarfında MySpace bahsi geçen güvenlik açığını kapadı.

İnternet üzerinden müzik satışlarında artış

Uluslararası Fonografik Sanayi Federasyonu (IFPI) yıllık raporuna göre, internet üzerinden müzik parçası satışında geçen yıla oranla yüzde %40 oranında artış sağlandı.

Korsanlığa karşı mücadelesiyle bilinen IFPI, tüm ülkelerin hükümetlerine internet üzerinden yasa dışı yollarla müzik parçaları indirilmesiyle mücadele etme çağrısında bulundu.

Kuzey Buz Denizi her geçen gün eriyor

Fransız Ulusal Bilim Araştırma Merkezi Araştırma Müdürü Jean-Claude Gascard, düzenlediği basın toplantısında, 2007 yazında Kuzey Buz Denizi’ndeki buzullarda beklediklerinin çok üzerinde erime görüldüğünü açıkladı.

Bunun en önemli nedeninin küresel ısınma olduğunu belirten Gascard’a göre, geçen eylül ayında buzulların Kuzey Buz Denizi’nde kapladığı alan yaklaşık 4.13 milyon kilometre kare oldu. Bu alan 2005’te 5,3 milyon kilometre kareydi.

2005’e göre buzulların kapladığı alanın yüzde 23 azaldığını belirten Gascard, buzulların kapladığı alanın 2 yılda 1 milyon kilometre kareden daha fazla azaldığını kaydetti.

Kuzey Kutbu’ndaki buzullar son 20 yılda yüzde 40 oranında yok oldu, ortalama buz kalınlığı ise 3 metreden 1,5 metreye düştü.

World of Warcraft 10 milyonu aştı

Blizzard, ödüllü MMORPG'si World of Warcraft'ın oyuncu sayısının dünya üzerinde 10 milyonu aştığını açıkladı.

Özellikle tatil döneminde birçok yeni oyunucunun katıldığı ve eski oyuncularında tekrar hesaplarını kullandığının belirtildiği açıklamaya göre şu anda Avrupa'da 2 milyonun üzerinde, Kuzey Amerika'da 2.5 milyonun üzerinde ve Asya'da da yaklaşık 5.5 milyon kullanıcı bulunmakta.

Blizzarda CEO'su Mike Morhaime, "Dünya üzerinde birçok farklı bölgeden bu kadar çok kişinin oyunu seçerek kendilerini desteklemesinin gurur verici olduğunu" söyledi ve önümüzdeki aylarda da büyük bir eklentinin oyuna katılacağını sözlerine ekledi.

Heath Ledger öldü

28 yaşındaki genç aktör Heath Ledger Manhattan’daki evinde ölü bulundu.

Avustralya doğumlu Heath Ledger 2005 yılında “Brokeback Mountain”daki rolüyle Oscar’a aday gösterilmişti. Ölüm nedeni hakkında bir fikir edinebilmek için otopsi sonuçları beklenen Ledger'in Brokeback Mountain filminde tanıştığı Michelle Williams'dan bir kızı vardı.

Ledger 10 yaşında Avustralya’da başladığı sahne kariyerine bir çok yapım sığdırmıştı. Bu yapımlar arasında "I Am Not There", A Knight’s Tale”, The Patriot”, “Monster’s Ball”, “Caddy”, "10 Things I Hate About You" ve son olarak “The Dark Night” (henüz gösterime girmedi) filmlerinde rol almıştı.

eBay sees chief executive resign

Meg Whitman, the chief executive of auction website eBay has resigned after a decade at the helm of the firm.

Yahoo! has scrapped its plan to create dozens of destinations for consumers to celebrate brands.

Yahoo! launched the first of these properties in late 2006 with one celebrating the Nintendo Wii.

Most Americans Ready for ITV

While everyone keeps waiting for interactive TV to arrive, it may have already snuck into American's living rooms. A new survey conducted by Harris Interactive revealed that 66% of Americans use their remotes for basic interactivity.

That's everything from electronic programming guides, video on demand and digital video recordings to actual interactive experiences with shows or commercials. What the survey also revealed was that well over half of the U.S. population is ready and eager for deeper interactivity with all programming, including a 66% interest to interact with commercial advertising.

Initiative Wins Cadbury Schweppes $150M Media Account

Interpublic Group of Cos.' Initiative has won Cadbury Schweppes Americas Beverages' $150 million media account, following a review, the marketer said.

Initiative beat out the incumbent, WPP Group's Mediaedge:cia, and Interpublic siblings Martin Agency and Mullen. Martin pitched the account through its Ingenuity Media unit and Mullen pitched through its MediaHub unit.

EBay CEO Meg Whitman Says She's Stepping Down

Meg Whitman will soon step down as chief executive of eBay Inc., the online auction company that went from wobbly startup to multibillion-dollar household name in her 10-year tenure.

Whitman, 51, had been reported to be plotting the move and handing the job to John Donahoe, 47, who has been heading eBay's core auction and e-commerce businesses. She confirmed her March 31 departure as eBay reported fourth-quarter earnings Wednesday.

Youtube erişimi, Atatürk'e hakaret içeren yayınların kaldırılmaması gerekçesi ile savcılık kararı doğrultusunda engellendi. 19 Ocak 2008 Cumartesi günü itibari ile Türkiye'den Youtube'u açmaya çalışan internet kullanıcıları, şöyle bir engelleme mesajı ile karşılaştı:

Unilever'in dondurma markası Magnum, global ajans olarak Interpublic Grup'tan Lowe ile çalışacak.

Unilever, global reklam ajansı olarak McCann ile çalışmaya devam edecek ve sadece Magnum markası için Lowe ile işbirliği yapacak. Arnold artık Terminatör'de oynamayacak

2009'da gösterime girecek olan Terminator serisinin yeni filmin Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins'de Arnold Schwarzenegger'in oynamayacağı kesinleşti.

Yapımcı James Middleton'un açıklamasına göre California Valisi Arnold Schwarzenegger, artık böyle bir rolde oynamak istemediğinden dolayı projeyi reddetmiş. Projede yer alacağı konuşulan isim ise Batman Begins filminden tanıdığımız Christian Bale.

Resmi kadrolar açıklanmasa da maalesef Arnold'un olmadığı bir Terminatör filminin iyi olacağına inanmıyoruz.

$5 Billion in Mobile Ads for US, Europe

US and Western European mobile advertising revenues will reach a total of $5.08 billion by 2012, up from an estimated $106.8 million at year-end 2007, according to Local Mobile Search's "US and Western Europe Mobile Advertising Revenue Forecast, 2007-2012."

Local Mobile Search predicted that the United States would account for about $2.3 billion of the total, with $2.8 billion coming from Western Europe.

Rumors surround Microsoft, Yahoo, eBay

Microsoft is buying Yahoo, and both companies are intent on buying eBay. At least that's the latest rumor to ricochet through Silicon Valley.

In a blog post, StreetInsider.com reports that officials at Microsoft are mulling over the idea of making their informal offer to buy Yahoo from last year a real possibility in 2008.

Taking the theme of convergence into its own hands, Google has announced that it has been working with Panasonic to build TV sets that display internet content such as pictures and video. According to a Reuters report, the TV sets will be available sometime this spring.

The sets will allow consumers direct access to Google properties like YouTube and Picasa. However, the deal is said to be non-exclusive.

Yeni albümünü "In Rainbows"'u internet sitesinden hayranlarının belirlediği ücret karşılığı indirmelerine izin vermiş olan grup, bu kararından vazgeçerek iTunes'un teklifini kabul etti. Hayranları, grubun albümünü iTunes'dan 13,4 Euroya indirilebilecek.
